Art: JME Pool
Jul 11th, 2007 by Alkatraz
She studied at the Berkenboom Technical institute in Belgium, has participated in many exhibitions, and has private collections in Australia, Belgium and the United States. She was Featured Artist at the Nundah Art Prize and was a finalist for the 2006 Artforce Awards. She is doing big things in the art community and staying busy making sure her art is seen. So here you have it......the amazing art of JME Pool.

Check this bio out pulled from JME Pool's website:
"JME Pool’s work is a mixture of thoughts, memories and moral commentary surrounding the child and childhood. This centres on the idea of primordial evil and weather we are born with this evil inherent within us. Elements of humour and symbolism are an important aspect of JME’s work. Humour works to soften the moral commentary and develop recourse.
One theme that is often apparent is that of the feeling of isolation during adolescence. This is reflected in the appearance of rarely more than one figure in each work.
Although people often see the darker side in JME’s work, it is not all gloom. The characters still have an element of cuteness. The term "Spooky-cute" has been coined to describe her work (Sally Brown- Rave Magazine). Additionally the feeling of hope is always present be it in an image of a bluebird or that of the hope being present in the character eyes. The feeling is never too far away. "

Below Alkatraz Interviews JME Pool to find out what brought her to her current state of mind and what she has palnned for the near future.
Alkatraz:
What in your life prompted you become an artist?JME Pool:
I have always been doing art of some sort. I can't really remember when it started. In high school I was heavily involved in the arts and was the school 'Arts Leader'. When I finished high school I went overseas and studied Applied Visual Art at an art school in Belgium. So it"s been a while.Alkatraz:
Your style of art is very unique, is there any particular artist that influence that or was is all "self realized "?JME Pool:
lot of it is 'self realized' but, that said I don't think anything can be completely uninfluenced. I owe a lot to my brother's fascination with all things Anime and Japanese pop culture. I was a nerd and drew LOTS of Manga in my spare time.I also love the feel of Tim Burton films and Film Noire so I think there's a lot of that there too. As far as artists go, I guess Bouguereau in the way that he gives children a really sweet, yet sinister look. And whoever drew the Anime my brother watches.
Alkatraz:
It's been said that most if not all artists get inspiration from trauma and the darker side of life. Is this true? What are you driven by?JME Pool:
had a pretty horrible childhood- I struggled with depression and had a rotten home life- so yeah. I guess that's my childhood trauma coming out.Alkatraz:
How many paintings have you done over the years?JME Pool:
I've been painting for years in a number of styles, but since consolidating my style I have painted 108. I keep track and know them all.Alkatraz:
Have you done any other types of art?JME Pool:
I often work in pastels and graphite and just drawing as a change from oils. It's nice being able to do something that is finished quickly- oils can take up to a month to complete. I recently received a commission from the local government to do some public art. That was still painting but working in acrylic.Alkatraz:
In your bio on your site (dollydidit.com) you mentioned that your work stems from the isolation of adolences, can you expand on that?JME Pool:
I have always been quite shy which has made it hard for me to get to know people. At 15 I changed schools and had to start all over again. I also had a close friend and my grandfather die within a couple of months of my starting the new school (My friend died accidentally on the day before my 16th birthday- I found on my birthday). This, along with problems at home fucked me up good and proper. I became really introverted and damaged.Alkatraz:
Do you have a favorite peice that you have done, right now?JME Pool:
This keeps changing and really depends on where my mind is at at the time. Right now it is Toy Soldiers- but I also love Eryn and Dreaming of Piracy.Alkatraz:
What types of artists are you looking at now if any?JME Pool:
I love art and am always checking out other people's stuff. I love Geoffrey Proud. He does lots of creepy stuff which is still really funny. I also really love Audrey Kawasaki's work on wood. Then there's Bouguereau, Waterhouse and a few other long dead people.Alkatraz:
So you have been all over the art world....what can we expect from you next?JME Pool:
I will be taking part in a group exhibition at "Paddington Contemporary Fine Art" in Sydney in October entitled "So Fresh". I also am hoping to participate in Art Shanghai in November. Keeping VERY busy until then!Alkatraz:
Well thank you for taking the time to visit with us and I hope we can have you back here again sometime.
